The Search Dogs UK Instructor Development Pathway has been designed for experienced handlers who are ready to transition into instructing, as well as existing instructors wishing to develop a more structured, evidence-based approach to teaching.
Open to delegates from both operational and sporting backgrounds, the programme focuses on the science of learning, instructor skills and the systematic development of reliable search dogs. Rather than simply teaching what to train, the programme develops an understanding of why training works and how to create clarity for the dog in front of you. Delegates learn how to systematically build behaviour, introduce challenge at the appropriate time and develop dogs capable of progressing confidently from foundation training to advanced operational or sporting performance.
Each course combines classroom learning with extensive practical application, ensuring delegates gain the confidence to coach others, deliver structured lessons and develop measurable training outcomes.
The Instructor Development Pathway is delivered as a series of standalone three-day courses, allowing delegates to build their knowledge progressively while applying their learning between modules.

Learning Theory
3 day course - Dates TBC
Learn how to teach and coach a clear, measurable and reliable trained final response using food reinforcement. This programme focuses on instructor methodology, progression criteria, troubleshooting and objective assessment before progressing to search development. Ideal for instructors working with puppies or dogs that are motivated by food reinforcement.
Focused Indication: Toy Pathway
3 Day course - Dates TBC
Designed for instructors working with toy-motivated dogs, this course develops the same objective indication standards using toy reinforcement. Delegates learn how to build motivated, durable indication behaviours while maintaining clarity, precision and independence throughout the learning process.
Search Foundations
3 day course - Dates TBC
Develop the fundamental skills that underpin reliable search behaviour. Topics include motivation, independent searching, reward placement, handler influence, distractions, false positives and missed finds, and introducing variable reinforcement to reduce the likelihood of unwanted behaviours. The course provides an objective progression framework to develop confident, systematic and reliable search dogs.
Imprinting New Odours
3 day course - Dates TBC
This programme teaches instructors how to systematically introduce new target odours while maintaining search behaviour, indication quality and behavioural confidence. Delegates will learn how to structure odour introduction, promote rapid odour discrimination, avoid common training errors and develop dogs capable of confidently transferring existing search behaviours onto new
target odours using evidence-based training principles.
Advanced Instructor CPD
1 or 2 day cpd course - Dates Can Be Agreed
Following completion of the Instructor Development Pathway, instructors can continue their professional development through specialist one- and two-day Continuing Professional Development courses.
Each programme focuses on a single subject in depth, combining current research with practical application, instructor discussion and practical problem-solving.
